Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a Department of Energy lab, is currently considering whether or not they will perform a NASA-funded experiment involving the irradiation of 24 squirrel monkeys. The proposed experiment would expose these tiny monkeys, only a foot tall, to one of three kinds of space radiation encountered on a journey to Mars and back.
As soon as IDA caught wind of this experiment, we teamed up with Shirley McGreal of the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) to issue an official complaint to NASA and BNL – challenging the experiments on scientific grounds and citing fatal flaws such as redundancy, species differences, and available alternatives already in use. Shirley McGreal is known for stopping primate exportation (for experimentation) in India and Bangladesh by exposing the cruelty of U.S. radiation experiments that demanded primate subjects.
Now, our mission is to hold NASA and BNL accountable for these experiments. When we provided the contact information for the Administrator of NASA, the Director of BNL, and the Secretary of Energy, our members responded with over 14,000 emails. If you have not yet done so, please follow the link below to voice your opposition to the inhumanity inherent in these experiments.
Please join Alicia Silverstone, Woody Harrelson, and Zachary Quinto in speaking out against these experiments.s
